Tips
Want to make your room appear larger?
Try using lighter colors in your flooring. Deep rich flooring colors
will reduce your room’s apparent size, while lighter colors
will make your space seem much larger!
Test your Color Schemes!
When selecting a color scheme, be sure to test your colors by day
and by night. Artificial light can make some colors appear totally
different at night. And because incandescent bulbs generally give
a yellowish glow, your color scheme may not look as you expect.
Odd Numbers work best!
Be sure to always group your accessorizes in odd numbers. Threes,
Fives, Sevens and Nines work much better than an even collection
of accessories!
Window to the World!
Whether you chose to make your windows a focal point, or an inconspicuous
background, remember that each window in your home serves a functional
purpose. Privacy is key to window treatment design.
Timely Trends
Did you know that all design and color trends tend to be cyclical?
Usually, trends change every 8 to 10 years. Are you are the cutting
edge or a trend, or has your style been waning a bit?
Lighting!
Cool light can add a sense of openness to your space, as well as
dignify your room arrangement. If you’re looking for an open,
cool look, then try fluorescent bulbs. When properly used, these
bulbs will help your room appear more distant, and enhance objects
more distinctly.
Insulate your Windows with Design
Layered window treatments are the best insulators! Blinds, pleated
shades, cellular shades or wood blinds all add privacy and energy
efficiency when combined with a beautiful window treatment.
Use Area Rugs as room dividers
Nothing helps to define your space better than a beautifully designed
area rug. Whether you want to set off your dining room, or create
a cozy conversational area in your home, try incorporating area
runs into your design plans.
Furniture Tips
Avoid placing large pieces of furniture across the corner of a room.
Instead, place large furniture pieces close to the highest wall,
especially if your room has a vaulted ceiling.
Enlarge your space with Furniture
Smaller rooms will appear larger by using furniture with lots of
curves. Rounded arm upholstered pieces, round accent tables, and
rounded backed chairs will give your small space much more movement
and style.
Wallcovering Illusions
A large sweeping wallcovering design can make a room look much smaller.
And conversely a small room can be given unity with a tiny-patterned
paper and matching fabric.
Want Taller Ceilings?
Try selecting vertical striped wallpaper – your walls will
definitely appear to be higher. And if you want to “lower”
the ceiling, a border will help to break up your space, and bring
that high ceiling down to earth.
Border It
Wallcovering borders can accentuate or create architectural interest
where none previously existed. Celing lines will soar when accented
by a border.
Prints Galore
When decorating with mutilple prints, follow the 60-30-10rule. Your
main pattern will be used the most (60), your secondary patter half
as much (30), and your third (10) splash pattern is used sparingly.
